In an interview marking the 25th anniversary of Macao’s return to the motherland, Hu Weixing, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Macau, highlighted Macao’s achievements under “One Country, Two Systems”. Politically, Macao has consolidated its constitutional order, improved its national security legal system, and adhered to the principle of “patriots governing Macao”. Economically, it has developed into a world-class tourism and leisure center with growing non-gambling sectors, seeing significant growth in fiscal reserves and GDP, while maintaining low unemployment. Socially, people’s livelihoods have been enhanced through improved infrastructure, comprehensive welfare systems, and poverty alleviation. Macao has also actively integrated into national development, particularly via the Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin to promote economic diversification. Hu noted President Xi’s emphasis on diversified development, governance efficiency, opening-up, and social stability, and stressed that Macao’s successful practice demonstrates the viability of “One Country, Two Systems”, which carries global significance with values of peace, inclusiveness, openness, and shared benefits, offering insights for cross-strait relations.
